Everyone loves to nerd out about SEO (including me!), but this is not the FIRST thing you should be focusing on when it comes to your website.
I’ll share my experience with mistakes I’ve made, and how you should think about organizing your website as a business owner.
Hello, I’m back. Back from maternity leave, and I wanted to talk about SEO Well, rather, what you should be focusing on instead of SEO. So I’ve got my diet. Dr. Pepper, we’re going to talk about it today.
If you’re new here, my name is Jess. And that’s Morgan. And I create videos for business owners like you to help you save time and look good online. And today I want to talk about why yes, SEO is good. But it’s not what we should be focusing on.
First, we’re just gonna dive right in. Because I know that it’s super fun to be like, Oh, I’m ranking on Google. I’m on the first page of Google or the second page of Google. How fun, great, we’re getting lots of traffic to your website, lots of people are reading the posts or recipes. But that is an issue when they aren’t taking an action.
So before we focus on SEO, we need to think about the user experience and the strategy of your website. Because a bunch of traffic is nice. Sure. But if they’re not actually doing something and doing what you want them to do, they’re just a number. And that’s it. And yes, I know that, like, if you run ads on your site, that’s beneficial.
If you’re partnering with brands getting sponsorships like those numbers are helpful. I get that. But for business owners, who we are selling things, we want people to hire us, we need to think more about that user experience before we spend a ton of time and money on all that SEO and optimizing our site. Okay, great, Jessica. So what do we do?
How do we think about the user experience in the strategy, there are a lot of things that go into this, this, I’m just gonna give you a few overarching things I’m not saying this is covers all the bases. But the first thing is your site speed, because people are impatient.
And they want your site to load quickly. So if it’s taking more than just like three to five seconds, you need to work on your site speed. This might mean changing to a different host, it might mean you need to go compress a lot of your images, and re upload them.
It might mean if you’re on WordPress, using some different plugins, there are so many plugins that you can use, like caching, plugins, speed, plugins, etc. So focus on that site speed first, that’s one of the easiest things you can do to enhance the user experience.
The next thing is making sure that your site is easy to navigate. And it makes sense. This is the most difficult part because you actually need someone else to locate your site. You really need a third party. Because if you especially if you’ve set up your own website, if you’ve DIY your site, then things make sense to you we do things, the things we do we do them because they make sense. Does that make sense?
So you need a third party, because you may look at your site and be like, Yeah, makes sense. For example, I have done this on my own site. A year or two ago, I made a change to my navigation menu. And I kind of rearranged a few little things and put some other things in a drop down and I was like, great. This is This looks nice.
And then it’s a little more condensed. I love it. And my enquiries dropped off. And I was like me, me, me. It’s summer. Maybe that’s why. And I was talking to a friend about it. And I was like, I’m not getting inquiries. I don’t know what’s happening. And so she like pulled up my website.
She was like, where’s your portfolio? Because like, that’s the first thing I would want to look at, since you’re a designer. I was like, oh, it’s under the dropdown. And she’s like, Yeah, that didn’t make sense. I was trying to be fun and, you know, make this change that I thought made sense. I thought it made sense.
And it didn’t we get too caught up in trying to be fun or different that we confuse people. So you really want to take a hard look at does it make sense how to navigate through your website and find the information that we’re looking for?
Also, are you saving people from having to click 15 million times to find what they need? For some reason there are a lot of people who like to break all the information up into a bunch of different pages. Like I’ve seen people who have like here’s my packages my offers but then the process is going to be on a different page and the pricing is going to be on a different page.
And then the FAQ is going to be on a different page as well. And that while yes, it, you can click on the page you want, you’re causing people to click a bunch of different times, instead of, hey, here’s all the information in one place, it would be better to have your different offers separated on different pages.
And then you can put all of the process and pricing for that offer on one page, instead of having a ton of different pages. Does that make sense? So look at this it speed, make sure it’s the navigating your website makes sense. And then also, I kind of touched on this a second ago.
But make sure you have all the information that people need on your site, like and make sure your messaging is clear. So this really comes down to the messaging and the actual copy so that people understand what it is you offer. And what’s included the pricing, all that kind of stuff, because I’ve been to websites where it’s like, what exactly do you offer?
What what’s going on here? I don’t understand. I don’t understand. I actually was on a website. I don’t remember even how I landed there. It was a corporate website. And the big headline was, like, people products and power or something like that. And I was like, Okay, well, I don’t know what this is. And I was reading. And it was so full of jargon.
And like, there was no actual like services listed. And in corporate, I feel like maybe prices aren’t as common to list. So that was fine. But I mean, it was just talked about, like, strategy and teams. And I don’t like all this stuff that I was like, I I do not I’ve clicked around to like six different pages.
And I have no idea what you do, or who for besides other businesses. That’s all I get. That’s all I’m understanding right now. So make sure the pages themselves also are clear. And again, a third party is probably going to help you the most because, again, if you wrote your own copy, what you wrote probably makes sense to you.
So having someone else look at it is going to be the most beneficial so that it’s like, okay, new here don’t understand, and they can help you kind of fill in those blanks. So it makes sense. And yes, I realize how much I just said the phrase make sense. And that last one clip.
So I hope you go spend some time looking at your website, have other people looking at your website, and really dedicate some time and energy into that user experience before you spend more time and more money on your SEO because we want we want the traffic.
We want the traffic to do something because that is a bigger ROI on your SEO. Well that’s two acronyms that was a lot of letters. But I hope this was helpful.
I do have some other videos related to use your experience and organizing your website. I will link those down in the description if you want more information. If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and I will see y’all next time.
